Evictions: Landlords can now give tenants only a 30-day notice to evict them (Civil Code 1946.1) The law used to require landlords to give tenants at least a 60-day notice to evict them if the tenant had lived in the unit over a year. This law expired in 2005. This law does not apply if the tenant has a lease that has not expired, or if the rental unit is under rent control. Action: DCA’s Consumer Service Unit takes complaints against landlords that do not give tenants proper notice. If the landlord gives the tenant proper notice but a tenant needs more time to move out, DCA’s Dispute Settlement Services may be able mediate an extension. May be reprinted for non-commercial use if a credit line is included acknowledging the County of Los Angeles Department of Consumer Affairs.
