Maximum Amount Individuals
Can Sue For Increased
From $5,000 To $7,500
(Amends Code of Civil Procedure 116.240, 116.610 & 116.940)
The law used to allow people, businesses, and government agencies sue for up to $5,000 in Small Claims Court. If each lawsuit was less than $2,500, they could sue as many times as they wanted; if the lawsuit was over $2,500 each, they could sue only twice in any calendar year.
This new law lets individuals sue for up to $7,500. Businesses and government agencies can still sue for up to $5,000 only. Everyone can still sue as many times as they want if each lawsuit is less than $2,500, or twice within a calendar year if the lawsuits are more than $2,500 each.
