Phishing: “Phishers” can be penalized for tricking consumers to give them their financial information (Business and Professions Code 22948) This law lets consumers sue “phishers” who trick them to give them their private financial information for 3 times their actual damages, or $5,000 per violation, whichever is greater. This law also allows the Attorney General and District attorneys to sue “phishers” for $2,500 per violation. Action: DCA’s Consumer Services Unit takes complaints against “phishers” who violate this law.
