Motor Vehicles: Copying Keys
Vehicle Code Section 9954
Effective January 1, 2008
The law did not used to require car makers to provide car owners with information needed to make copies of their car keys.
- This new law requires car makers to provide locksmiths with the information they need to make replacement keys for new vehicles sold or leased on or after January 1, 2008. The information has to be made available by phone or electronically 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
